And Maryna’s story is one of resilience, courage and starting again.
Maryna lived in a small village near Energodar, Ukraine. On the morning the war began, life felt normal, children sent to school, her husband heading to work. But within an hour, everything changed. Panic spread, shops emptied, cash machines were drained, and the world as she knew it stopped.
Days quickly turned into survival mode. Sirens, explosions and fear became part of everyday life. With two young children, Maryna prepared for the worst, packing essentials, creating a safe space in the basement, and rationing food just to get through each day. One piece of bread per day. Small portions carefully planned. Strength wasn’t a choice… it was necessary.
As conflict escalated, her region became increasingly dangerous, especially with the nearby nuclear power plant under threat. Communication was cut, checkpoints appeared, and leaving safely became almost impossible. But like so many mothers, Maryna’s instinct was clear, protect her children at all costs.
After weeks of uncertainty, fear and failed attempts to escape, Maryna made the brave decision to leave. With her family, she travelled through dangerous “grey zones,” navigating bombed roads and armed checkpoints. It was a journey filled with risk but also hope.
Eventually, they reached safety. And from there, another journey began.
Maryna arrived in the UK with her children, starting completely from scratch. A new country. A new language. A new life. But with determination and strength, she rebuilt – step by step.
